Situated in the city of Portsmouth, the University of Portsmouth is an open university. Having a history which goes back to 1908, the Park building was established as a community college and public library. The university got its university status in 1992 through the Further and Higher Education Act. Before that, it was called the Portsmouth Polytechnic. Now, the university counted amongst the leading 100 institutions of higher education across the globe.
The university offers numerous educational programs including Pharmacy, Mechanical Engineering, International relations and politics, Palaeontology, Criminal Justice, Criminology, and many more. The university offers some of the most reputable study programs which have been ranked in top categories by various associations. Other than this, the university research work has also been listed in excellent category in Research Excellence Framework in the year 2014.
The university is divided between campuses namely University Quarter and the Langstone Campus. The University Quarter is situated on the Portsmouth Guildhall region while the Langstone Campus is nestled in Milton area. University Quarter is the larger campus of the two and is composed of the university buildings which are set all around the centre of the city. Students here are offered with teaching facilities and residential options.
The other campus houses sport's ground and provides other facilities like a restaurant and accommodation. Other than this, Langstone Campus used to house the university's School of Languages and Area Studies, which is now in Park Building in the University Quarter. There are a total of 5 faculties which are categorised into 29 departments. Students can choose from business and law, technology, science, humanities and social sciences, and creative and cultural industries. The university offers 150 postgraduate degrees and over 200 undergraduate degrees. Apart from this, the university offers 65 research degree programs.
